Cathal McConnell & Gerry O’Connor ~ Music and Song of South Ulster
Cathal McConnell (Boys of the Lough) is joined by Gerry O’Connor (Skylark & Lá Lugh) to present a program of music and song celebrating the rich musical heritage of Scotland and Ireland
Cathal McConnell is a world-renowned musician, singer and founder member of premier traditional group, The Boys of the Lough. His relaxed stage presence and ability to communicate his songs and music has endeared him to audiences for decades. The redoubtable Cathal, who is known worldwide for his musical charm and wit, has recorded over 20 albums of music and song with “ the boys”, and fellow member, Dave Richardson, paid tribute saying “He sings to you rather than at you. He wants you to focus on the message of the song rather than on him as a performer. He’s passing on the music, not using it to impress.” For his contribution to traditional singing, Cathal was awarded the Gaelic Language Television (TG4) Award as Singer of the Year in 2010.
Sparkling" " Immaculate" and "Dazzling
Ability" were words used by the national Press to describe the music of
Gerry O'Connor, one of Ireland's
most outstanding fiddle players. Gerry’s solo fiddle album “Journeyman” was
described in The Living Tradition magazine as "one of the great records of
fiddle music". Gerry has recently completed a research masters in the
Dance Music of Luke Donnellan, an early 20th century collection of Ulster
music, much of which can be traced back to the great Scottish fiddle music
collections of the 18th century. He is currently documenting Cathal's
formidable unrecorded collection of Ulster Songs. Gerry is also a violin-maker,
music teacher and music producer.
